In the 1940's a heat pump was developed by using a freezer capturing the "wasted" heat from the compressor!

Then, with the oil embargo of the 1970's, it spawned a renewed interest in developing energy efficiency, and this was the catalyst that has helped the geothermal industry to be the hottest market for saving your energy dollars today.
